The Exposition

I've always had a thing for writing.

Born and brought up amid Hong Kong's vibrancy, writing was my refuge within the craze of the city. For the unexpressive, relatively reserved child I once was, my sole way of displaying affection was through my words – more specifically, poetry. Despite having transitioned from the genre in recent years, my voyage with the pen and paper began with the melodic beats of poetry. But this style of writing forged my voice and my idiosyncratic spin on an activity that is seemingly mundane.

The Climax

It later changed forms. But the passion only grew stronger.

In March 2017, I was officially invited to attend a 'High Potential' Golden State Warriors Summer Camp at the team's practice facility in Oakland, California. When I departed training on the last day, there was more than just basketball on my mind. Rosalyn Gold-Onwude visited us on the final day, telling her story of her entry in the world of sports journalism. Since meeting Ros, I was engrossed in the field and took every opportunity to traverse it – it was the perfect medium for me to intertwine my love for writing and sports.

The Resolution

And it does so every day. Every single day.

After dwelling on Ros' speech for months, I finally had a crack at sports journalism. After a two-week immersive program with The School of The New York Times, I joined my high school's newspaper and helped escalate its sports section to cover all varsity sports. Entering UCLA as a freshman in 2022, I was captivated when the opportunity to apply for one of the nation’s most premier college newspapers emerged. A year at the Daily Bruin metamorphosed my abilities as a writer and elevated that sports journalism hankering to new levels, facilitating in my hiring as an assistant Sports editor and then Sports editor – my current role.

Outside of the American college sporting landscape, my exposure to cricket growing up propelled a fascination for cricket reporting. This began with writing for Cricket Hong Kong – I am the primary reporter for all international games of the Hong Kong men's cricket team. With experience interning at NDTV, both in the News and Sports desk, in the summer of 2023, I extended my orbit to all things under the Associate Cricket realm – but a particular focus on Southeast Asian and women's cricket – as an author and part-time podcast co-host at Emerging Cricket, and a contributor for Minor League Cricket. In February 2024, I was hired as the manager, executive assistant and an author at UCLA Blueprint

In February 2024, I joined UCLA Blueprint as its manager, executive assistant and an author, engaging deeper into the Los Angeles journalism scene. This role has offered me perspective into societal issues shaping the city and refine my ability to tell stories that bridge complex topics with accessible narratives. Later that summer, I interned at the South China Morning Post, where reporting on the Paris Olympics and global events taught me how to lean into my edge – being a young, trilingual female of color – to make even the most saturated story distinct.
